Cross recessed countersunk head tapping screws are designed to form their own mating thread when driven into a pre‑drilled or punched pilot hole, eliminating the need for a separate tapping operation. The countersunk head sits flush with the workpiece surface, providing a smooth finish suitable for applications where a snag‑free profile is required. The cross recess (Phillips or Pozidriv, depending on the specification) centers the driving tool and facilitates both manual and automated assembly.

Dimensional and technical requirements are defined by DIN EN ISO 7050, which has superseded the older DIN 7982 and is identical in content to ISO 7050:2011. This standard specifies self‑tapping screws with thread sizes from ST2.2 to ST9.5, in product grade A. The head dimensions have been revised compared to the withdrawn DIN 7982 and are not interchangeable. The screws are intended for use with ST‑type threads per ISO 1478, which feature a sharp, widely spaced thread profile optimized for cutting or forming into thin sheet metal, plastics, and other relatively soft base materials.
